founded in 2009, its current line-up aligned in January 2011 with Niklas Tieke (guitar), the only
original member to remain, Thomas Mrosek (saxophone, recorder) Patrick Aguilar (bass) and
Moritz Nixdorf (drums).
The band’s sound may appear heavy and dark at times; however, it may sound playful and dreamy,
too. Avoiding the usual rock song structures, Giant Hedgehog do not play riffs but use themes that
return as a musical motive and develop like in classical music. Apart from variation and playing
around with musical themes and with dynamics, the essential cornerstones of Giant Hedgehog’s
sound are complexity, odd time signatures and rhythms, wild power and even tense silence.
Furthermore, the group does not feel obliged to a certain musical background. Eclectically, the band
members just plunder Rock, Metal, Jazz, Post Rock or anything else they simply like.
When being asked about their influences, the boys state names such as 1970′s Prog Rock groups
VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR or KING CRIMSON, as well as modern Prog/Avantgarde
Metal bands like MAUDLIN OF THE WELL, KAYO DOT or OPETH.
After several gigs in 2012 and 2013 Giant Hedgehog has assembled a yet small but very loyal and
devoted fanbase. Some of these concerts were played in prestigous locations, like Osnabrueck town
hall or at various festivals. In January 2013 the band even went on air, playing material and giving
interviews on the radio.
Considering the length and complexity of Giant Hedgehog’s prog-compositions it appeared as a gift
of Fortuna that audio engineer Steffen Lütke, who happened to attend one of their concerts,
submitted the offer to record the band for free in the Artez-studios in Enschede (Netherlands).
During the cold march and the hot summer of 2013 the group recorded their first EP, containing
their eponymous 25 minute longtrack which is the first song ever to be rehearsed by the band. The
EP is now available here on Legacy Records, so feel free to purchase it! If you do, be prepared for a
journey through a land of beauty and wild power, a melting pot of both old vintage sounds and
modern heavy Prog.
Ysma is an instrumental progressive rock band from Münster, Germany. Founded by guitarist Daniel Kluger and bass player Torge Dellert (studying psychology together) in 2009, Fabian Schroer (guitar) and Jens Milo (drums) went on to join the band. The quartet combines atmospheric elements and progressive rock/metal influences, always focussing on the ambience of a song as well as unconventional rhythms and parts out of the ordinary. Coming from different musical backgrounds, each member brings in his personal note to create the band’s characteristic sound which might be best described as a blend of different styles and genres: the aggressive, forward-going tone of progressive rock and -metal meets more quiet, ambience- focussed moments with a lot of room for each note. Ysma’s style of instrumental songwriting therefore incorporates frequent dynamic changes both within and between songs as a means of coming to rest, of “breathing“ in a musical manner. Inspiration and influence for this approach derives from listening to bands like Opeth, Tool and Porcupine Tree as well as early, classic prog bands like King Crimson and Rush. Being an instrumental band, Ysma attach great importance to telling the ideas and stories behind their songs. Given the song title and listening to the music open-mindedly, the listener’s imagination is triggered as to what the transported atmosphere and concept might imply, leaving room for interpretation and association. After playing several gigs throughout 2011 and 2012, Ysma were soon gaining reputation as an energetic live band. As the next logical step, the band released their first record entitled “Vagrant“ on April 21st, 2013. The 12-track album was recorded, mixed and produced by the band members themselves over a period of four months. “Vagrant“ was particularly well received as a debut, covering the band’s diverse spectrum from purely acoustic tracks to heavier pieces with a prog metal edge. Future plans include the band’s unplugged concert premiere, taking place in their hometown in October, followed by supporting Norwegian prog metal group Leprous on their show in Essen, November 11th 2013. The release of the (yet untitled) sophomore record is scheduled for summer 2014, followed by promotional gigs and festival appearances showcasing the new material.
